ADN Junior Champion Magazine

ADN Junior Champion Magazine

By Arkoneil Ghosh and Anushka Konar

The second issue of the ADN Junior Champion Magazine (ISSN 2759-0380) focuses on children and youth’s experiences of disasters in Bangladesh. This edition, published on 13 October to mark ‘International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction’, highlights their voices, particularly from Indigenous communities, bringing attention to their realities amidst climate-related disasters and extreme weather events.

The magazine features eight articles that explore diverse experiences, including four contributions by Indigenous youth. These pieces offer a perspective on how Indigenous communities navigate disasters caused by specific hazards, such as cyclones and floods, while striving to preserve cultural knowledge and traditions. The remaining articles reflect the resilience and adaptability of other young individuals facing similar challenges in Bangladesh.

The editorial journey began with eight Bengali articles translated by a dedicated team. During the review, however, the translations were found to need more depth and coherence. Recognising the need for improvement, we relaunched the call for submissions. This effort resulted in additional articles written in both Bengali and English, allowing for a richer collection of stories. The editorial process involved careful translation, editing, and refinement to create a cohesive narrative that authentically amplified the contributors’ voices.

This issue is further enriched by editorial messages from ADN Presidents, Prof Nibedita Ray-Bennett and Dr Hideyuki Shiroshita, which emphasise the magazine’s alignment with disaster risk reduction goals. We also thank the guest editor, Dr Ranjan Datta, whose foreword underscores the importance of centring Indigenous perspectives in discussions of disaster preparedness and resilience.

The creative collaboration extended internationally, with the Japan team curating artwork and crafting an engaging layout to make the magazine visually compelling. This combined effort resulted in a publication that informs readers while fostering a deeper understanding of disaster preparedness and resilience.

This issue reflects the determination of young individuals to share their stories and the editorial team’s commitment to amplifying their voices. By addressing the challenges of disaster risk reduction, we aim to contribute to building a global culture of preparedness and resilience.

We acknowledge the efforts of the editorial board members—Dr Aditya Ghosh, Ms Sadia Afrin Sayfa Nebagan, Mr Mohammad Fahimul Islam, and Dr Biswajit Paul—whose work was instrumental in realising this magazine.

We express our gratitude to the authors, whose contributions are at the heart of this issue.  Looking forward, the ADN Junior Champion Magazine aspires to continue showcasing stories of resilience and innovation. With every issue, we strengthen our commitment to amplifying young voices and fostering proactive disaster awareness.
