Today we celebrate snake’s unique role in our ecosystem:
- Snakes are both predator and prey, vital for sustainability of a healthy diverse ecosystem.
- Snakes prey on disease-carrying animals, controlling the spread of Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis for humans and animals.
- Snakes are ecosystem engineers. Preying on rodents, they protect crops and excrete seeds in new locations, supporting plant growth.
Most snakes are not aggressive and non-venomous, and often bite in self-defence, when threatened or provoked; trying to kill them will expose you to a higher risk of bite.
